Colorado Camping Tips for Western Colorado

Colorado camping can be more challenging at times than in other parts of the country, like camping on slickrock or sand.

Always plan for the worst and hope for the best when planning a camping trip. It pays to plan everything from sleeping arrangements, clothing, meals, medical needs, insect repellents, snake bite, etc. No matter how careful you plan, very seldom will you remember everything.

Where is a good place to setup your camp? When camping you don't want to get washed away in a flash flood.(been there, done that) See the canopy photo the gulch directly above the ledge. When camping, are there any dead trees nearby that could fall on your camp if a bad storm comes through? Are there any cliffs or good tree stands to help break gusting winds?

Need help picking a good quality tent design for where there can be high winds, no trees, shelter,or shade etc?

Temperature variations with altitude and whats needed to stay comfortable can vary greatly. When Colorado camping in the summer at 9000ft. it can be 90 degrees or 35 and snow. I have seen weather change dramatically in just half an hour. Always bring more of everything than you think you will need.

The desert temperatures can vary widely because of the low humidity from afternoon to night making you wish you had brought more blankets to sleep with.

Colorado camping is wonderful for people to get away and enjoy each others company, roughing it, and working as a team in the outdoors. Children especially benefit from spending time with their parents in a setting that does not include television, cellphones and other distractions.

A good tip to remember is to keep things as simple as possible like putting cooking ware or sleeping gear in separate containers to avoid confusion when trying to find something. Preferably a water proof tote box with a lid like Tupperware makes works great for this and then label each. This makes it a lot less likely to forget and leave something at home.

When we boat camp at Lake Powell Utah, each one of us has our own container with our name on it for sleeping and personal hygiene products. If not kept simple and organized you will not be going on many camping trips because nobody will want to go again.
