Cow Elk Muzzleloader Hunting?

by Dale Mitchell
(Minoa,NY USA)

I will be going to South West Colorado this year muzzleload hunting. I will be shooting either my Triumph or T/C Encore in 50 cal. I know the laws about shooting powder, and belted bullets. Do you have any experience with using a .475 bullet with a patch? As I still am not sold on the belted bullet yet.

Thanks
Dale

Hi Dale,

Good to hear from a fellow New Yorker. I have not had any experience shooting a patched bullet before but feel your doing this to get away from the plastic bases of the belted bullets like the Powerbelt bullets. I also shoot an Encore 50 cal. and several other Thompson Center muzzleloaders.

Plastic bases always require more care to be consistent but I have had great results using them as long as I keep to my loading ritual of cleaning between shots, which I would rather not do either.

I am currently using the Powerbelt Platinum 338 gr. in my Encore with 150 gr. of Triple 7 and love the way it works on elk and its accuracy.

I have had good luck with the Thompson Center Maxi-Balls and Hunter as well but they can get a little messy with the lube.

Hornady has just come out with a non plastic belted bullet called the FPB in 350 gr. that I am really looking forward to trying as long as it shoots well, hopefully without the cleaning ritual.

Good Luck,
Howard

Hornady 350 grain FPB bullet
by: Howard

I thought that I would add that I used the Hornady 350 grain FPB bullet during the 09 muzzleloader season in my Thompson Center Encore to harvest a cow elk and it worked great. Full broadside penetration and the elk went down on the spot at about 10 yards shooting distance. Nice to use a bullet that is accurate and does not need to be cleaned between shots. This bullet sighted in well at 100 yards with my normal load of 150 gr of triple 7. Thanks Hornady for a great slug...Howard

Thanks for the info. I will also look up and research the Hornady bullet. And yes you are correct on trying to get away with the plastic. I did purchase a new cleaning tool "The Retreiver"
that is supposed to clean all the junk that the cleaning patch leaves behind. We will see how this works.

Thanks Again!
Dale
