No story to tell yet....just love the backroads for 2 primitive campers with an suv rental. We like to fish, and are in the Southwest for ruins and rock art.
Thank you
Hi Linda,
The first thing I would do is go and buy a Colorado Atlas & Gazetteer by DeLorme or The Roads of Colorado by Shearer Publishing. Either show in great detail dirt roads off the main roads and show private lands. You can camp anywhere you wish on BLM or Forest Service lands unless signed as to no camping. Check out staythetrail.org for more on where you can and can not go. Just get off the main roads onto the dirt roads and find a good looking camp spot to spend the night or up to 14 days. From September on tourism slows but there will be hunters camping in some areas but this should not pose a problem. I camp like this all the time and have more fun just winging it with a tent and no camper so I can camp where ever I feel like. I bring extra water in case there is no stream for cleanup and a small stove for cooking. Most of the time we just eat in the small towns near by. Some of the fishing requires flies or lures only so make sure your careful with with that and bring an electric tire pump so if you travel on lots of dirt roads you can let out a little air for a smoother ride. This time of the year you can expect just about any kind of weather so be prepared for heat or snow. I was just up camping in the San Juan mountains and got caught in a snow storm on Stony Pass, next day sunny and warm with shorts on. You have picked a great route so you should have a fun time exploring. Good Luck...Howard
